“December 7th, a day which will live in infamy,” FDR’s address to the nation a day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor was a pivotal moment that signified the United States would be entering the war against Japan. The U.S. would later declare war on Germany and Italy on December 11th, only hours after both countries declared war on the United States.

During the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the majority of Americans could not swim. When the war shifted from the sea to the skies that morning in December, the fate of swimming as a sport was forever altered.

Due to a critical lack of pilots, the United States military increased its efforts in every aerial branch to train and recruit more aviators. The V-5 Naval Aviation Cadet Training Program was one of the most rigorous and prestigious training routes, producing thousands of Top Gun Navy pilots.

According to a U.S. Navy outdoor-survival instructor, more than half of the incoming Pre-Flight cadets could not swim when they shipped into basic training, despite the fact that swimming was a life-or-death skill for pilots flying combat missions over the ocean. Even though 75% of the Navy’s pilots who were shot or forced down landed safely, only 5% of those men made it because they were unable to swim or find food or water on islands and unfamiliar terrain.

Olympic swimmers, major league baseball players, professional football players, and athletes whose images endorsed Wheaties’ “Breakfast of Champions” campaigns were among the tens of thousands of young men, aged 18 to 26, who applied for this daring naval aviation program. V-5 Pre-Flight schools, which modeled their training after Annapolis’, were able to recruit some of the best swimming coaches in the country thanks to their commitment to using their expertise for free across five campuses located in various parts of the country. To put it in today’s context, picture Michael Phelps training naval cadets how to swim.

Before getting behind the controls of some of the military’s most potent warplanes, cadets had to endure 90 days of rigorous physical training and study of navigational academics. Several former cadets claimed that “swimming was the most difficult course at Pre-Flight,” and that it was responsible for the elimination of roughly a quarter of the cadets. Several students drowned or otherwise perished during this ground training program, but the rigorous standards and inherent dangers were understandable given the context of a time of war.

In order to survive gunfire and the suction of a sinking airplane, cadets in the Navy’s Pre-Flight swimming course had to swim one mile and dive fifty feet. In a matter of weeks, cadets who were unable to swim were jumping off of platforms into pools of burning oil. The cadets also had to go through the infamous Dilbert Dunker, a mock cockpit used to teach pilots how to escape from a sinking plane and made famous in the film “An Officer and a Gentleman.”

Given that eighty percent of these seaborne pilots would likely have to land on water during combat, training centered on stamina and the ability to stay afloat for hours in rough waters until rescue. Pre-Flight used competition with top swimming universities like Stanford and other military bases like Camp Lejeune to boost morale. In 1944, cadets at the St. Mary’s College Pre-Flight School in Moraga, California, set new records in the following swimming events: the 50-yard freestyle in 24.3 seconds, the 100-yard freestyle in 55.2 seconds, the mile in 23 minutes, the underwater 25-yard swim in 13.6 seconds, and the 25-yard carry swim in 20.8 seconds.

During the course of the war, these schools saw an influx and rotation of roughly 80,000 cadets and over 1,000 instructors. President George H.W. Bush (one of the youngest cadets to enter the program) and Lt. Gerald R. Ford coached Pre-Flight swimming.

Today, swim training still plays an important role in Pearl Harbor. Naval Aviation School’s Command Detachment Pearl Harbor screen and train prospective search and rescue swimmers prior to schooling, teach open water survival skills, administer second-class swim tests and directly assist Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific with training of SAR swimmers at Pearl Harbor.

The Indoor Ocean Where The US Navy Tests Its Ships

“AQUARIUM EXPLODES” was the headline all over social media this morning. The Radisson Blu hotel’s enormous aquarium in the lobby ruptured on Friday, spilling thousands of gallons of water, tropical fish, and debris into Berlin’s chilly streets.

Several media publications, including The New York Times, reported that the 50-foot-tall, 38-foot-wide AquaDom aquarium, which was later forced to be evacuated, was the largest freestanding aquarium in the world according to its creators when it exploded before 6 a.m. local time.

After over 100 first responders arrived at the site, which was close to the main plaza of Alexanderplatz, the outlet said that at least two people had been transported to the local area hospital with glass-related injuries.

According to the Associated Press, some 300 guests were evacuated from the hotel.

The circular aquarium, which encircled the hotel’s glass elevator and provided an inside-out view of the marine life, had some 1,500 tropical fish from 100 different species.

“It’s a picture of devastation with lots of dead fish and broken shards, the ones that might have been saved were frozen to death,” said Sandra Weeser, a representative of the federal parliament who had been staying at the hotel.

One Twitter user @QuakeChaser35 posted footage of the devastation.

“The fish that have survived are being moved as safely as possible,” said Markus Kamrad, an official representative of the Berlin Senate, told news sources. “Our Plan A is to reactivate the electricity. Plan B would be to bring them to a safe location, and we have some offers from places that say they are ready to take them.”

Although the cause of the incident is still unknown, authorities were looking into potential structural problems that the explosion might have caused to the hotel.

Police do not believe it was a targeted attack, according to the BBC; local media suggested that a technical issue may have been to blame.

New business tower in China has a pool with breathtaking views from the 71st floor.

The title of the World’s Highest Outdoor Swimming Pool now goes to China. Construction of a new 1,322-foot-tall tower by Chicago-based architects Goettsch Partners is now complete in Nanning, China. The tower’s crowning feature is an outdoor swimming pool that, according to the architects, is the highest in the world.

The hotel’s pool on the 71st-floor terrace is 1,060 feet above the ground, making it the highest in the world. Previously, the 57th-floor infinity pool at Moshe Safdie’s Marina Bay Sands held the title.

The Guangxi China Resources Tower, at over 2.93 million square feet, is the 18th tallest building in China and the 37th tallest building in the world. It is a mixed-use design that includes a hotel, office spaces, and retail.

More than 60% of the 86-story structure’s lettable space, or 272,000 square meters, will be occupied by offices. Approximately 6,000 square meters of retail space and a Shangri-La Nanning hotel with 336 rooms are also planned.

“The building is a symbol of rising prosperity for the city,” notes James Zheng, AIA, LEED AP, CEO and president of GP. “It further sets a world-class standard for quality that is meant to endure.”

The tower, developed by Shenzhen-based China Resources Land, will serve as the focal point of a brand-new 90-hectare urban quarter in Nanning. The podium and basement of the building are linked to the structures around it.

Beginning in 2014, the building process will be completed by the end of 2020 (November). The company claims that the building is completely occupied and functional now that the interior fit-out is complete.

The hotel emerges atop the office volume, drastically altering the building’s profile. The lower volume is capped by a monumental terrace at Level 71, which serves as a one-of-a-kind outdoor sky space where guests can swim in the hotel’s pool. From sunrise to sunset, the sweeping 180-degree panorama offers unparalleled views of the surrounding lakes, parks, and mountains.

The tower is an essential part of a larger mixed-use development, and its design to LEED Gold standards places an emphasis on sustainable sites and energy optimization. The podium and basement levels of the various buildings work together to form a seamless network that is optimized for the greater master-planned development. Sunshades on the building’s exterior, combined with a high-performance façade enclosure system, allow for abundant natural light and breathtaking vistas to penetrate every level while significantly cutting down on energy consumption.

Mechanical systems have been developed to maximize the efficiency of operation, reduce energy and water use while increasing comfort levels inside the building. The highest quality materials are used throughout the structure to emphasize longevity and durability and lessen the building’s future impact on the local environment.

“The tower is a sustainable response to its urban context,” sayid Travis Soberg, AIA, LEED AP, in a press release. “The building integrates conservation methods throughout the design that reinforce our commitment to environmental responsibility.”

Chlorine Genie is one of the new pool products that has been getting a lot of attention in 2022. Picture yourself swimming in water that has been treated to be soft, descaled, pH-balanced, and sanitized without the use of any potentially harmful chemicals, toxic additives, corrosive salt water, or dangerous irritants.

Get the Ultimate Water for your pool with the help of the Chlorine Genie. The Chlorine Genie is an independent appliance that interacts with your existing pump, filter, and heater. It’s one of the four must-have items for any swimming pool.

The electrolytic cell in the patented Chlorine Genie is immersed in salty brine softened water, which produces the chlorine your pool requires. A reverse osmosis and water descaling system are integrated into the unit to soften the water. The electrolytic cell separates the ions in salt and water to produce chlorine, sodium, hydrogen, and oxygen. Pure chlorine is produced from the chloride ions, which is then diluted with water and pumped into the pool. To adjust the pool’s pH, sodium combines with the hydrogen and oxygen in the water.

The HydraLux is a one-of-a-kind automatic pool cover made of extruded rigid PVC slats.

The slat design eliminates the rope/track/leading edge bar interface found in traditional automatic pool covers, allowing automation to be provided on pools that could not previously accept an automatic pool cover. Furthermore, multiple covers can be deployed from a concealed recess in the pool floor to accommodate even the most complex pool shapes and designs.

The Jandy® TruDose chemical controller will keep your pool water balanced even between service visits. TruDose uses advanced pH and ORP sensing technologies to constantly monitor levels as water flows through the pool’s plumbing, ensuring a clean, safe, and more comfortable swimming pool experience.

TruDose is simple to program and install, with a large LED readout that comes pre-mounted and plugs into a standard GFCI outlet.

TruDose includes an integrated flow switch to ensure that chemicals are only dosed when water is flowing through the system. TruDose stops dosing but continues to monitor pH and ORP levels once they reach their setpoints.

Between service visits, the water chemistry is kept balanced. TruDose detects pH and ORP readings as water flows through the pool’s plumbing and delivers a dose of acid to lower pH and activates the salt chlorinator to generate chlorine as needed to maintain consistent levels for perfectly balanced pool water.

There’s no need to change the chlorine output on your Jandy AquaPure® salt chlorinator because TruDose tells your chlorinator when it needs to produce chlorine and when there’s enough in the pool.

The Jandy VersaTemp Heat / Chill pump with SoundShieldTM Technology ensures your pool or spa is always the perfect temperature, whether you like it hot or cold, and it operates much more quietly than traditional heat pumps (compared to previous Jandy models).
