Fire crews and paramedics were spotted at the scene

A large presence of emergency services were spotted attending an incident in Brighton. Crews were spotted on Brighton Marina this evening (December 7) following a fire at a block of flats.

Crews responded to the fire at around 5.18pm following reports of smoke in a residential building. The emergency services present included multiple fire engines from the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) and ambulances from the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb)

ESFRS reported that a small fire was discovered in the basement of the flats on The Boardwalk. The fire was later extinguished by crews using hose reels.

A statement from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service reads: "East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 17.18 today 7 December 2022 to reports of smoke in a high-rise residential building on The Boardwalk at Brighton Marina. There was a small fire in the basement which crews put out using a hose reel.

"Eight fire engines attended the scene, and 10 breathing apparatus were used to help check on the welfare of residents and clear the smoke. We would like to thank everyone in and around the building for following our guidance while we worked.

"There are no reports of injuries. The fire is being treated as accidental."
